President's Message

Mother Nature has sure done a good job of reminding us it's winter! Hopefully February and March will be a bit calmer because we have a lot of important and fun events coming up that you don't want to miss! Our next daytime meeting, Friday, February 1st, is one we hope many of you can attend. We will hear from Blue Valley school psychologists and counselors about suicide prevention in our schools and learn what the signs are to watch for when a student is in distress. The meeting is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Hilltop Conference Center, room B.

On Thursday, February 28th, please join us for our annual Summer Opportunities Fair at Hilltop from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This event always has a great turnout and we have several new types of day and sleep-over camps to learn about including chess, dance, cooking, and a camp just for girls. Feel free to bring your kids along so they can ask questions!

Please see below for even more upcoming events, including Brain Blizzard, Robotics Share Fair, and another evening meeting event in April. We look forward to seeing you!

Amy Gallentine,

2018-2019 BVPAGE President

Upcoming Meetings and Events

Unless otherwise noted, daytime meetings are the first Friday of the month from 11:30-1:00 at Hilltop Campus in Conference Room B (use north entrance). Feel free to bring your lunch! Please note that locations vary and event dates and locations are subject to change.

Summer Opportunities Fair
Thursday, February 28th, 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Hilltop Conference Center
We have a variety of new camps coming this year so don't miss this first look! Click the heading for more information.

Fostering Friendships with Gifted Kids
March 1st, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Hilltop Conference Center Room B
Friendships can be tricky for anyone, but connecting with others is sometimes more challenging for gifted kids. Is your kid the bossy one? Super-introvert? Over-the-top passionate about one (and only one) topic? These traits often push potential friends away, without our kids understanding why. Counselors from around the district will be with us to discuss how to help our children forge solid friendships and avoid pitfalls.

Brain Blizzard
Sunday, March 3rd, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Scheels Training Center, Corbin Park (upstairs)
This is always a fun event for gifted middle school kids to test their knowledge and earn great prizes! Click the heading for more information. Register your teams here: https://goo.gl/forms/wqTdbdrizJlcev63

SENG Spring Parent Groups
Exact dates and times TBD
SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted) Groups are small, guided discussions for parents of gifted children. Each group meets with other parents and two trained facilitators for eight sessions, using Jim Webb's A Parent's Guide to Gifted Children as a starting point. Every attempt is made to have a morning and evening session, but this may change with enrollment.

Robotics Share Fair
Friday, April 12th, 12:15 to 1:45 p.m.
Blue Valley CAPS, 7501 W. 149th Terrace, Overland Park, KS
Blue Valley 5th grade gifted classes meet in one large group to run their robots through a variety of challenges. Kids get to know each other before middle school and have the chance to pit their robots against one another. We are happy to say the Overland Park Bomb Squad will be back again this year to present their amazing robots. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!  This is an easy, one-day commitment and we would love some volunteer help in both set up and tear down. Please visit the volunteer section of BVPAGE.org for more information.

Don't Ask Alexa, Siri, or Google - The Parent Panel
Thursday, April 11, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at Hilltop - NO DAYTIME MEETING THIS MONTH
PARENTS of gifted children, it's YOUR turn! Last year, our kids got a chance to hear from high school and college students about their journey growing up gifted. This year, please join us for an evening of questions and answers, stories, adventures, and exploits from parents doing their best to raise gifted children. Our parent panelists will discuss their joys, challenges, successes, and strikeouts. This upbeat forum will allow you to talk with and ask questions of others who understand, have been there, and are still there - doing their best to be better parents!

Year-End Meeting and Gifted Resource Swap and Shop
Friday, May 3rd 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
District Office Campus, Commons, 15020 Metcalf Avenue, Administrative Entrance
